Have you been involved in a collision while pregnant?

by | Jun 14, 2022 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Pregnant mothers still have to go about their daily business, whether that’s work or other commitments. Often, this means that they continue to drive or occupy vehicles as a passenger.

During a collision, a pregnant person is potentially exposed to numerous injuries, which can be complicated by their condition. Outlined below are some of the more serious injuries that warrant further consideration.

Hypovolemic shock

During a collision, high volumes of blood can be lost. The body will compensate for this by making reserved blood available for the most essential organs, potentially placing the mother and fetus at risk.

Placental abruption

Placental abruption is the most common serious injury suffered by pregnant women during a vehicular collision. During the crash, the placenta may become detached from the wall of the uterus prematurely. This can significantly reduce the flow of blood and oxygen to the baby, placing both mother and child at risk. Typically, this injury tends to occur when the force of the crash is substantial. If the front of the car has been damaged so that it compresses the mother’s abdomen and chest against the steering wheel, then placental abruption could also be an issue.

Fortunately, unborn children are relatively well protected, but in a severe crash, both mother and child can suffer severe injuries or even fatalities. If you have been involved in such a scenario, and the crash was caused by the negligence of another road user, you might be able to claim compensation for harm suffered by you and your child. Getting in touch with someone knowledgeable in the field of personal injury will help you to obtain justice.
